Rita Hancock Webb Sherrill

Mrs. Rita Hancock Webb Sherrill, age 92 of Lebanon, passed away Saturday December 23, 2023 at the home of her son in Donelson, TN. Born April 16, 1931, she was the daughter of the late William Lillard and Sarah Esther Shaver Hancock. Mrs. Rita grew up on the family farm in Lebanon and graduated from Lebanon High School. After graduation, at the age of 19, she moved to Donelson and became employed by the South Central Bell Telephone Company as a switchboard operator. Mrs. Sherrill met her first husband, John Clay Webb and the two married and began their family. When the children were born, Rita then went to work for Dr. Gaston Sr. as a receptionist, a job she would hold for the next 27 years. Mrs. Sherrill became a widow in 1983 when her husband passed. She later moved back to Lebanon and married Mr. Sam Alexander Sherrill, who also preceded her in death in 2014 after having shared 28 years of marriage. Mrs. Rita was a faithful member of the Lebanon First Baptist Church. She and Sam loved attending the meetings of the “LLL” and going on various trips with their church family. She was also a member of the Horn Springs Home Demonstration Club.

In addition to her parents and two spouses, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra Lee Webb Raymond; sisters, Sarah Chambers, Blanche Ricketts; brothers, James, Bill, Whaley, & Charlie Hancock.

Mrs. Rita is survived by her two sons; John Stephen Webb of Las Vegas, NV, and Douglas Harold Webb (Martha Manning) of Donelson, TN; grandchildren, John Anthony Raymond, John Michael Webb, Jeremy James Webb, Laura Lynn Webb, and Brandie Nicole Webb Rion (David); great-grandchildren, Cason Michael Rion, Myko Anthony Webb, & Easton Rion; sister, Ruth Corley and a host of nieces and nephews and extended family.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday December 29, 2023 at 11:00 AM from Ligon & Bobo Funeral Home with Jason Ligon officiating. Interment will be at 1:00 PM in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Nashville. Visitation with the family will be held on Thursday December, 28, 2023 from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM and again on Friday after 10:00 AM.

Pallbearers: Randall Keith, Brian Keith, Mike Kurtz, John Michael Webb, Jeremy James Webb, and John Anthony Webb.

    I got to know Rita when I became a member of the Lasater family . My husband Ernest and Rita’s husband Sam A. (That’s what everybody called him) were first cousins. She was such a joy to know and her and Sam came to all of our Easter gatherings with all of the Lasater*s and Christmas dinners also where we met at the Leeville Methodist Church.. she was a joy to know and we are so sorry to hear about her passing.
