  3. Tilford and Pat Elkins says:
As a fellow classmate of Lebanon High Class of 1967, Johnie was a dear friend to me, my wife Patricia, and all other classmates. Many people never knew the strength Johnie showed as being a pioneer of integration in the 1960’s. Neither did many know the hurt that she overcome during that tumultuous period. She showed everyone what true class looked like, and we loved her very much. Just tell her something could not be done, and watch her make it happen. She is gone temporarily, but she will never be forgotten. God just drafted one of his faithful Christians to help Him.

That period and that time was not for the faint of heart. Johnie had an unwavering courage about her spirit of toughness, caring and love. She has remained my friend for over 67 years and we can sit down together and discuss anything from politics to religion, and never have a cross word. Johnie Payton loved Lebanon, Tennessee and Lebanon Tennessee loved Jonnie Payton. I will miss her special way of caring for all. I watch her be a mother for her nieces and nephew and. I saw her be a parent to her siblings Johnie will be missed by many, but especially by
me. Your work is done here so rest me sweet friend.

    • Carol Jennette Denney says:
My dear friend from childhood and church member for many years, we were part of early school years that exhibited nothing but sincere love of our school, teachers and classmates, community and especially family. Johnnie and I became even closer when it was she and I, plus a few others, who was in the old Attorney Avon Williams sit ins that allowed us entrance to the once all white LHS. Even closer as the only 2 blacks to ride “15” bus to school every day. If any one was in our seat, at the front of the bus, they had to get up. Ironic! At the end of high school we attended different colleges but until recently we always stayed close and attended the reunions. Through prayer things changed for the better and deep committed relationships of love between our LHS classmates and us, were established. Only a few of us left now, but surely we will meet on the other side. Johnnie, your presence will be missed on this side of heaven. You have entered into your well deserved rest in that beautiful city not made by man. You are eternally loved! My condolences to your family waiting to see you again. ❤️

Johnie Peyton would take my Receipt from my hand,  and pay for my full meals at times when I came to CrakerBarrel to dine in.

  15. Debra Sharfner-Cutler says:
    To the family:

Gerald, Meredith and I were truly saddened when we heard the news of Mrs. Peyton passing away. We will never forget the time that she took to create the Rainbow Kids choir at Sam Houston Elementary School. She was so patient with us and she cared. She practiced with us, developed our voices and built our self esteem. We will never forget the times she picked us up in her van when we needed a ride. She would also come to Aunt Lucy’s house and give Gerald piano lessons. She was much more than our music teacher, she was family! I am so glad that I got to speak with her last year to thank her for everything but I had no idea that it would be the last time I spoke with her. God works in mysterious ways but I am glad she doesn’t have to suffer anymore. She will greatly be missed.

    Love,

Debra Sharfner-Cutler, Gerald Patton & Meredith Patton

  20. Denise Gibson says:
I never had the privilege of teaching directly with Johnie, but I knew of her outstanding reputation and professionalism due to teaching in the same school district. She was the music teacher of all 3 of my children. Each of them, even the one that lives out of state, contacted me upon hearing of her passing. They all shared their appreciation of her as a teacher and sadness at her death. To me this is one of the highest honors an educator could receive-to be loved and remembered for a positive learning experience even after several years. Heaven has gained a bright star! Prayers to all who know and mourn her passing.
